Captain Henry E. Marx, Master Mariner and founder of Landfall in Stamford, CT, crossed the bar on June 28, 2018. A lifelong mariner, Capt. Marx saw service in the U.S. Navy and the Norwegian Merchant Marine, and delivered yachts along the East and West Coasts for over 20 years. He acquired Landfall Navigation, the marine navigation and safety equipment chandlery, in 1982.

What the heck is JYRA? Well, at one time it stood for Junior Yacht Racing Association and has since been renamed Junior Sailing Association of Long Island Sound. We had a reunion of JYRA sailors in 2009, and we have been encouraged to do an encore performance.

What happened to the tide charts? WindCheck is my primary source for local tides.

My husband John and I were making the run from Isles of Shoals to Provincetown, heading back to our homeport of Rowayton, Connecticut after spending a month in Maine. Both of us were a bit wistful that our cruise was coming to an end, but we were enjoying a lovely day in August, about 10 miles offshore, with no other boats in sight. There was no wind, so we were motoring along at about 7 knots on our Cambria 46 Starlight. (Fun fact, her first owner was Christopher Reeve, who had her built in 1989 and named her Sea Angel.)

Jim’s catastrophic skiing accident on February 3 left him paralyzed from the waist down, and a GoFundMe page was quickly established to ensure that he can one day return to his life as the well-known energetic Ronstan traveling salesman, a sailor with a wealth of nautical knowledge and jokes, and the consummate cheerleader for his family (his wife Alix is the two-time International Women’s Keelboat champion and his son Nick is an American Yacht Club Optimist sailor)

I love the content and format of WindCheck. I am a Rhodes 19 racer/sailor, and dabble in other sailing opportunities whenever I can.
