Laurie Vetere, a local attorney, Charlie Lefkowitz, a former town councilman, along with Mike Kaufman and I, founded the Setauket Harbor Task Force with a mission of increasing public awareness of the harbor’s plight, improving its water quality, and protecting its critical marine habitat.

Today, as the flagship for Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, American Promise remains a world leader in technology, equipment and practices aimed at having a low environmental footprint and a high environmental impact preserving our planet.

And this summer, boaters on Long Island Sound had many opportunities to see breaching whales up close, sometimes within 300 feet.

Stanford ecologist Paul Ehrlich put it best when he said, “In pushing other species to extinction, humanity is busy sawing off the limb on which it perches.” If phytoplankton can’t survive in the acidic seawater we have created, we stand to lose 50% of our oxygen supply and the very foundation of the ocean’s food chain.

On July 26, 2015 Providence, RI-based developer Deepwater Wind made history by breaking ground on the nation’s first offshore wind power project, three miles to the southeast of Block Island.

From humble but passionate beginnings as a tiny grassroots organization opposing a proposed nuclear power plant at North Kingstown, Rhode Island’s Rome Point in 1970, Save The Bay has grown into the state’s largest, member-driven, non-profit organization advocating for Narragansett Bay.

Longtime cruisers ben & Teresa Carey have teamed up with The Ocean Foundation to study the acidification of the sea.

Brock Callen, Jeff Brock and Rozalia Project’s Rachael Z. Miller gave presentations on geography, meteorology, marine science, marine ecology and conservation at schools throughout the Northeast.

With over 4,200 people involved in one way or another since our first days, Clean Ocean Access has conducted over 153 coastal cleanups that removed 63,000 pounds of marine debris and shown quantifiable reduction in marine debris at some locations….

The boating community exists in the boundary where land meets water, and today that boundary’s location is changing due to the impacts of global warming.
