Race starts June 20, now has a PHRF class

The Marion Bermuda Race prides itself of staying abreast of offshore racing, making changes to enhance the experience for all competitors, and the 2025 edition will be no different. The race has added a PHRF class, so now there’s a choice between ORR and PHRF. There are only two Category 1 ocean races on the East Coast that offer a PHRF class, and Marion Bermuda’s the older and larger one.

“To qualify for the Marion Bermuda Race, you’ll need a PHRF-New England Spinnaker rating,” said Race Executive Director Neil Redburn. “This will allow all entries to be scored fairly. The scoring will be done by Time on Time, matching the ORR class format. All boats will need to pass a pre-race inspection unless you did the 2023 Marion Bermuda Race or the 2024 Newport Bermuda Race, in which case you are prequalified.”

“The inspectors will help in any way they can to ensure your boat qualifies for the race,” Redburn continued. “In addition, to help you get through the requirements for the race from registration to crew requirements and inspection, we offer a Co-Pilot program which matches you to a highly experienced past participant in order to help you navigate through all that is needed to race. This is a great way to ensure you get to the start line properly prepared.”

“To improve scoring for ORR division boats, the race has adopted F-TCF scoring. It has proven to be the next step in leveling the playing field by using start day conditions and offering a single number system.”

J/Boats have added a special performance trophy for best finish by a J/Boat on corrected time in both ORR and PHRF divisions. “J/Boats have always been a big part of the Marion Bermuda Race, and with this addition we expect to see a very competitive fleet.”

“Offshore racing is expensive, so anything we can do to make it more affordable we will do. For the 2025 race, BermudAir is offering a 20% discount to all crews, families, and friends coming to Bermuda. Coco Reef Resort will also be offering discounts for stays in Bermuda.”

The 2025 Marion Bermuda Race starts Friday, June 20, so don’t wait. Register by December 15, 2024 and benefit from the early registration discount! For more information, visit
