Marine Navigation Course

Offered by America’s Boating Club of Greenwich, Marine Navigation (formerly known as Piloting) is the first of their courses on navigation. It focuses on navigation as done on recreational boats today and uses GPS as a primary tool while including traditional techniques so the student will be able to find his/her way even if the GPS fails. It includes many in-class exercises, developing skills through hands-on practice. Topics include: charts and their interpretation, navigation aids, plotting courses and determining direction and distance, the mariner’s compass, use of GPS, pre-planning safe courses and entering them into the GPS, determining position by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning – simple skills for checking that one is on course developing that Seaman’s Eye. Instruction is highly interactive.
